Savage’s A17 might be the best autoloading rimfire design on the market. It’s damn near as reliable as a centerfire, highly accurate and affordable to shoot. With a street price around $300, it’s priced low enough that every small-game hunter should own one. If you need more encouragement, read on to learn why I fell for Savage’s superb autoloader. the A17 chambered in .17 Hornady Mach 2 (HM2) occurred last fall in southeast Wyoming, when a group of us hosted by Savage Arms and Hornady descended upon the Cowboy State for two days of prairie dogging. During the shoot, we used Savage’s flagship bolt-action rifles as well as their new autoloading .17 HM2..

Savage Arms A17 HM2 Features

The Savage Arms A17 HM2 is a semi-automatic .17 caliber rifle that operates on a delayed-blowback action.  The lockup is held in place by a spring-loaded roller that offers just enough drag to change the timing of the bolt when it cycles.  This action is heavily inspired by Heckler & Koch’s roller delay system, but there are definite differences.  Aside, this rifle has a 20 inch barrel and ships with attached rails for mounting optics.

Savage Arms A17 HM2 Capacity

The Savage A17, as the name implies, is chambered in .17 Hornady Magnum Rimfire (.17 HMR) and feeds from a 10-round rotary style magazine that is very similar in shape and design to the mags used in the Ruger 10/22.  This magazine design is incredibly reliable and ensures that your rounds don’t improperly stack and cause rimlock.
Measuring 39.5 inches long with an unloaded weight of 5.7 pounds, the A17 is one of the lightest semi-automatic rifles on the market making it a very handy option for squirrel hunters, back yard plinkers and young shooters.  The lack of protruding edges will prevent it from getting caught on dense vegetation.

Savage Arms A17 HM2 Ergonomics

Ergonomics
The Savage A17 took a very modern approach to their ergonomics while still leaving the gun with a traditional shape.  The grip and forend use two-layer geometry along the contours that provide excellent grip without having abrasive surfaces such as what you find with more common grip texturing like stipling, checkering or adding sandpaper grips.

Savage Arms A17 HM2 Fit & Finish

The A17 is built on a composite stock that requires a lot of abuse to damage.  This high-strength material can flex considerably before breaking, though the rigid material is incredibly sturdy.  The bolt of the rifle is made of stainless steel and the receiver and barrel are black nitride coated making it so this rifle is nearly impervious to rusting.
