MP 40 Features

The MP 40 is a fully-automatic submachine gun that fires from the open bolt and is direct-blowback operated.  Its 9.9 inch barrel and folding stock made it a compact weapon that could easily be carried by vehicle crews and paratroopers along with infantry troops, especially squad and platoon leaders.  The MP40 has a hooded front sight and a square notch rear sight with two range settings.

The MP 40 is chambered in 9x19mm Luger and feeds from double-stack, single-feed detachable box magazines that feature a straight profile.  These magazines have a 32 round capacity and were so reliable and simple to produce that the Wehrmacht re-used the magazines in many later gun designs.


With an unloaded weight of 8.75 pounds and an overall length of 24.8 inches with its stock folded, the MP40 offered excellent mobility to its users.  Its weight and relatively low fire rate made it very controllable in full-auto fire both with its stock folded or extended.

The MP40 is one of those submachine guns that doesn’t offer a correct answer on where and how it should be held, so most of its users placed their support hand around the magazine well.  The pistol grip had cutting-edge ergonomics for its day and was machined out of steel with bakelite grip panels on either side.  The folding stock was very sturdy and relatively comfortable against the shoulder, but failed to offer a decent cheek weld.


MP 40 Fit & Finish

The MP40 improved on its MP38 predecessor with the use of stamped steel components and bakelite (polymer) parts.  Notably, there are early and late war examples of the MP40 that include some aesthetic changes as well as later models having thinner ribbed magazine wells.  All MP40’s have a bolt handle that can lock in the forward and rear position to make them drop-safe.
