Winchester 1887 Features

The Winchester 1887 is a lever-action 12 gauge shotgun and is one of the first, if not the actual first, repeating shotguns ever.  Designed by John Moses Browning, the patron saint of shooting stuff, this shotgun was an absolute game changer for the firearms industry.  It has a 20 inch barrel and has a stock and two-piece handguard made of the finest American Walnut.

Winchester 1887 Capacity

The Winchester 1887 is chambered for 2-¾” 12 gauge shells and feeds from a fixed 5 round tube magazine.Rounds are loaded directly into the magazine tube through the breech with the lever holding it in the open position.  Due to the rather strange mechanics of this gun, careful breach-loading and ammo placement can actually allow up to 7 rounds to fit in the gun.
Measuring just over 39 inches long with an unloaded weight of 8 pounds, the 1887 delivered unparalleled firepower in a compact package when it first hit the market.  With the same length and weight as a coach gun with more than double the ammo capacity, the 1887 offered highly mobile firepower that is still up to par today, more than 100 years later!  Shorter, stockless “bootleg” models offer even more mobility at the cost of accuracy.

Winchester 1887 Ergonomics

Ergonomics
The Winchester 1887 has a very typical buttstock and grip for a late 19th century design but has a rather unique handguard that is made from two separate pieces of wood that leave the magazine tube exposed on the bottom.  This shotgun is very well-balanced with the center of gravity near the front of the receiver.

Winchester 1887 Fit & Finish

The 1887 is made entirely of steel and American Walnut.  The stock and handguard are sanded smooth and sealed with boiled linseed oil while the receiver, barrel, magazine tube, lever and the internal components are blued to a dark finish.  Some receivers are color-case-hardened for a beautiful multi-color finish, however this was typically done with custom gunsmithing instead of being a standard production option.
