Walther Gewehr 43 Capacity
The Gewehr 43 is chambered in 7.92x57mm (8mm Mauser) and feeds from 10-round detachable box magazines. German soldiers were issued 2 magazines with this rifle with the intention of making Wehrmacht troops reload the empty magazines with the 5-round stripper clips used on the Mauser 98k.
Walther Gewehr 43 Feature
The Walther Gewehr 43 (gŭh-VĀR or gŭh-VĔR) is a semi-automatic, short-stroke gas piston operated rifle chambered in 8mm Mauser. Bedded in a hardwood stock, this rifle was built with a 21.5 inch barrel topped with a hooded front sight and range-adjustable tangent leaf rear sight. The gas system used in this rifle is almost entirely inspired by the Soviet SVT-40 rifle.
Walther Gewehr 43 Ergonomics
The Gewehr 43 has a very traditional feel when shouldered thanks to its wood stock with a half-pistol grip. Its charging handle sits along the left side of the bolt carrier at an upward angle. The notably small magazine release is located behind the magazine and is pushed forward to drop the detachable box mag.
Walther Gewehr 43 Mobility
Measuring 44.5 inches long with an unloaded weight around 9 pounds, this rifle has very similar marks for mobility as the venerable M1 Garand. Like other semi-automatic rifles of its day, its fire capability allowed Wehrmacht troops to lay down a considerable volume of suppressing fire while other troops maneuvered. Fortunately for the allies, Germany’s insistence on reloading with stripper clips hindered the application of the G43, so points get deducted from its mobility.
Walther Gewehr 43 Fit-N-Finish
The Gewehr 43 can be seen in many historical photos with a magnified optic attached as its use as a sniper rifle was definitely applied. Earlier examples of this rifle were beautifully machined according to Germany’s “quality over quantity” doctrine, however later production models have many of their non-contacting surfaces left with very rough finishes to speed up production as the Red Army was bashing down their front doors.
