It was developed in 1930 by Fedor Tokarev as a service pistol for the Soviet military to replace the Nagant M1895 revolver that had been in use since the Russian Empire, though it ended up being used in conjunction with, rather than replacing, the M1895. It served until 1952, when it was replaced by the Makarov pistol.

Tokarev Tt-33 Feature
The TT-33 (Tula Tokarev Model 1933) is a steel-framed, semi-automatic pistol that fires from a double-action trigger/hammer setup and is the Russian wish-dot-com version of the Colt 1911. The TT-33 operates on the Browning tilting-barrel short-action recoil system and even uses an identically-functioning barrel link and takedown lever.
Tokarev Tt-33 Ergonomics
The TT-33 has a similar control layout to the Colt 1911 that it shamelessly copied but doesn’t have any internal or external safeties, so muzzle and trigger discipline are paramount with this gun. Remember - the Soviets sent soldiers into battle with only half of them having rifles. Even today, some Russians are armed with pellet guns.
Tokarev Tt-33 Concealability
The TT-33 has a rounded contour along the rear of its slide which promotes an easy extraction from a holster. However, this pistol measures 7.6 inches long and 5.3 inches tall, so concealment would be rather difficult without a good holster and the proper attire. KGB agents shortly after WWII employed shoulder holsters to conceal these pistols under their poofy jackets before the adoption of the Makarov pistol.
Tokarev Tt-33 Fit-N-Finish
The TT-33 is available through importers and throughout the collector market and is still a reasonably priced surplus pistol. Some of them are factory-refinished and bathed in cosmoline while others show moderate to significant wear while also being bathed in cosmoline. You can remove the cosmoline with odorless mineral spirits in a full-detail stripping or you can leave it as-is until these guns are worth the price of a used car.
