Thompson M1A1 Capacity
The Thompson M1A1 is chambered in .45ACP and feeds from 20 and 30 round detachable box magazines or “stick mags” that are made from stamped steel. The M1A1 variant of the classic Tommy Gun was redesigned and produced without the ability to accept the 50 and 100 round drum magazines.
Thompson M1A1 Feature
The Thompson M1A1 is a direct-blowback operated submachine gun that fires from the open bolt and can be fired in semi-auto as well as fully-automatic. It has a 10.58 inch barrel with a smooth profile instead of the ribbed design seen in earlier models and its sights were changed to a simpler option. The M1A1 removed the useless Blish-lock system because engineers determined it doesn’t work in small arms and a direct-blowback action shows the same performance.
Thompson M1A1 Ergonomics
The M1A1 has a charging handle on the right side of the gun instead of on top like earlier models while its other controls remain the same. The stock has a significant drop to it which many find awkward; the most comfortable way to shoot any Thompson is by standing up straight and holding your head up instead of tucking your head down like we all do with every other long gun.
Thompson M1A1 Mobility
The M1A1 measures 31.9 inches long making it about as long as a standard AR15 with its stock collapsed, and has an unloaded weight of 10.8 pounds. With a full magazine, the M1A1 is double the weight of a typical AR. This is due to the all-steel construction and dense design of the Thompson along with its solid wood components.
Thompson M1A1 Fit-N-Finish
The M1A1 is the shortest and most simplified version of the Tommy Gun. It is made out of the same materials including its American Walnut stock, grip and handguard and its sights include a front sight blade and a simple V-notch and aperture rear sight. The most common components in this gun to fail are the rather thin magazines and the extractors which are known to snap.
