Ballistic Stats
The SVD was designed at Izhmash in Ishevsk, Russia by Yevgeny Dragunov from 1958 to 1963 and was adopted by the Russian military in July of 1963 where it became the go-to marksman rifle at the squad level. While its outer appearance has many similarities to an AK47, the actual construction and the internal components show very few similarities.

Svd Dragunov Capacity
The Dragunov is chambered in 7.62x54mmR and feeds from double-feed detachable box magazines. The sharp curve of the magazine is due to the double-stack design as well as the wide rim along the back of the cartridge’s case. Dragunov magazines are not interchangeable with PSL magazines, nor are they interchangeable between rifles made in different countries.
Svd Dragunov Feature
The SVD Dragunov is a gas-operated semi-automatic rifle that employs a short-stroke gas piston and 2-lug rotating bolt. It is built with a 24.4 inch barrel that is often paired with a standard issue 4x24 optic. The Dragunov provides a 1.5 to 2 MOA accuracy to skilled shooters using quality ammo.
Svd Dragunov Ergonomics
The Dragunov was designed to have the same control layout to the AK47 pattern rifles to accelerate training programs and to allow easy cross-platform transitions in gunfights. The longer handguard (compared to the AKM) allows the rifle to be placed on supporting and stabilizing objects without damaging or deflecting the barrel and the thumbhole stock comes with a cheek riser pad to improve the sight picture when using optics.
Svd Dragunov Mobility
The Dragunov measures 48.2 inches and has an unloaded weight of 9.48 pounds making it easy to carry on patrols, though the length does inhibit the ease of climbing in and out of vehicles. Most Dragunov rifles lack a bipod and most of them are aftermarket attachments, but this lack of a bipod reduces stability when firing from the prone position without the use of a sandbag or other support.
Svd Dragunov Fit-N-Finish
The Dragunov is built on a milled receiver and has a questionably long trigger pull. Since the rifle has been in service for over 50 years, it has undergone many improvements including major design overhauls that include a free-floated barrel version with an integrated handguard and scope mount.
