The Stoner 63 was designed by Eugene Stoner and Jim Sullivan, the two names behind the AR-15, and was developed at Cadillac Gauge and produced there and by Knights Armament Company. It was a gun specifically made for Navy SEALs and US Marines during the Vietnam War where an M60 would not be an appropriate choice for a squad support weapon on account of its size and weight. Stoner 63 Capacity
The Stoner 63 is chambered in 5.56x45mmNATO and, depending on how it is assembled, can feed from 20 and 30 round detachable box magazines or be fed by belts connected by M27 links. When set up to fire from belted ammo, the standard belt size was 150 rounds that was held in an attachable ammo box. While you can easily link together larger belts, the barrels on the Stoner aren’t quickly changed out, so belts are typically kept short.
Stoner 63 Feature
The Stoner 63 is a select-fire rifle that can be set up into multiple configurations including a more standard infantry rifle or as a belt-fed squad automatic weapon. Built with a 20 inch barrel, the Stoner operates on a long-stroke gas piston and multi-lug rotating bolt. The weapon itself is highly modular with conversions being easily completed by an armorer or a trained user.
Stoner 63 Ergonomics
The grip and stock of the Stoner, along with its safety selector, are somewhat of a mix between the M16 and the FAL. The charging handle is located on the top of the receiver in the rifle setup and along the bottom of the handguard in the light machine gun configuration, and at that point is non-reciprocating. The design allows the receiver to be inverted to switch setups.
Stoner 63 Mobility
The longest configuration of the Stoner 63 measures 40.25 inches long while the weight can range anywhere from 10.2 to 11.7 pounds. While the length keeps it on-par with the M14 and M16 rifles, its weight makes it the lightest LMG ever adopted by the US Military. Its light weight allowed Navy SEALs to carry this gun over long distances with the missing weight replaced by ammo to distribute to anyone who wanted to exchange gunfire.
Stoner 63 Fit-N-Finish
The Stoner 63 has receiver components made of stamped steel. This intricate stamped design ensured incredible reliability. The durability wasn’t as high as the M16 when looking at the lifespan through round counts, though it regularly beat out the M60 both in reliability and longevity.
