The Steyr AUG (German: Armee-Universal-Gewehr, lit.'universal army rifle') is an Austrian bullpup assault rifle chambered for the 5.56×45mm NATO intermediate cartridge, designed in the 1960s by Steyr-Daimler-Puch, and now manufactured by Steyr Arms GmbH & Co KG.

It was adopted by the Austrian Army in 1978 as the StG 77 (Sturmgewehr 77), where it replaced the 7.62×51mm NATO StG 58 automatic rifle (a licence-built FN FAL). In production since 1978, it is the standard small arm of the Bundesheer and various Austrian federal police units, and its variants have also been adopted by the armed forces of dozens of countries, with some using it as a standard-issue service rifle.

Steyr AUG Features

The Steyr AUG is a select-fire, gas-operated bullpup rifle that is built with a 20 inch quick-detach barrel and fires from a progressive trigger.  This means pulling the trigger back half way fires the gun in semi-auto while pulling it all the way back lets the gun fire in full-auto.  The AUG is designed to allow the bolt to be swapped out to eject out of the left or right ejection ports.

Steyr AUG Capacity

The Steyr AUG is chambered in 5.56x45mmNATO and feeds from proprietary, translucent 30 round detachable box magazines.  These magazines have a unique waffle pattern that provides extra grip as well as added strength to the magazine.  Larger 42 round magazines are also made for the AUG however they’re most commonly issued to troops carrying the HBAR variant.
Measuring 31 inches long with an unloaded weight of 7.9 pounds, the AUG offers excellent maneuverability through close-quarter environments.  The shorter 16” barrel models offer even greater ease of motion measuring only 27 inches long with reduced weight.  With its bullpup design, the AUG offers full-length rifle performance in a more compact package.

Steyr AUG Ergonomics

Ergonomics
While the AUG has been made in a few different configurations, the control layout remains the same.  The charging handle sits on the left side of the receiver under the optics, the front grip can sit vertically or horizontally and assists in barrel changing, the cross-bar safety sits above the pistol grip, and the magazine release sits behind the magazine for ambidextrous engagement.

Steyr AUG Fit & Finish

The Steyr AUG has a relatively simple disassembly compared to other non-AR pattern infantry rifles.  The aluminum receiver on the original AUG was cast as one piece including the scope housing to offer a very sturdy and accurate sighting system.  Current AUG production includes modular optics rail sections that can be replaced with simple tools.
