The new Hellion™ from Springfield Armory represents a radically unique and innovative approach to firearms design, helping to redefine perceptions of semi-automatic 5.56mm performance. Featuring a “bullpup” configuration where the action is located behind the trigger, the Hellion features an overall length of just 28.25-inches while still possessing a 16” barrel. The Hellion sports ambidextrous controls that work in concert with a reversible case ejection system. The result is a 5.56 that combines portability with potent performance.

Springfield Hellion Features

The Springfield Hellion is a semi-automatic bullpup rifle that is manufactured by HS Produkt in Croatia as the VHS-2 and is imported by Springfield Armory as the Hellion.  This rifle is available with a 16, 18 or 20 inch barrel that is mated to an adjustable gas block, and operates on a short-stroke gas piston operated action with a multi-lug rotating bolt.  This rifle was designed to address every shortfall of previous bullpups (aside from the squishy trigger) and has a bolt carrier assembly that allows the user to easily change the side from which shells will eject.

Springfield Hellion Capacity

The Hellion is chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO (.223 Remington) and feeds from all AR15 pattern magazines giving this rifle a standard capacity of 30 rounds.  This rifle has no problem running the shorter 10 and 20 round magazines as well as the longer 40 round mags, but anything higher than that poses a challenge due to its bullpup design.  The 60 and 100 round drums will fit, though their width will make shouldering the rifle extremely difficult if not impossible.  If you want to run 60 or 100 round magazines, you’ll need to use the quad-stack “coffin” mags.
Depending on the barrel length, the Betamax Hellion measures 28.25 to 32.25 inches long with its stock collapsed and 1.5 inches longer with it extended, and has an unloaded weight of 8 pounds.  This rifle’s big advantage is in its bullpup design that allows it to excel in tight spaces such as climbing in and out of vehicles as well as building interiors.  As a bullpup, the balance of the gun is very back-heavy since the heavier metal components are behind the trigger, but this imbalance tends to go away once the rifle is shouldered.  Becoming proficient at reloading can be a challenge for most users since you need to take the gun off of your shoulder to reload unlike with an AR where you can keep your rifle pointed at your target.

Springfield Hellion Ergonomics

Ergonomics
The Hellion has a unique control setup that includes quite a learning curve.  The ambidextrous safety selector is positioned higher than one might want, and this is to avoid accidentally switching the selector to “fire” mode.  All of the controls are ambidextrous including a top-mounted non-reciprocating charging handle that flips out to either side then springs back to center after, a magazine release behind the mag well, and a bolt release that can be pushed back with your thumb after inserting a mag.  The stock adjusts which is a less-useful feature since it already has a crazy-long length of pull, but it does have an adjustable comb to ensure a proper sight picture.  The grip has a 15 degree angle to it instead of the typical 30, and has 100% compatibility with any AR15 grip should you want to change it.

Springfield Hellion Fit & Finish

The Hellion is very well built with steel components that are black nitride coated to prevent wear and environmental damage and polymer components that are made of a high-strength composite.  The action is smooth, the recoil impulse is very tame, but there are some elements that could be better.  The rear sight is less than optimal with a small hole in a large polymer box, the trigger pull is heavy and incredibly squishy, and the disassembly process to clean the rifle is far more complex than an AR15 or even a Tavor.  This is not an entry level rifle.
