Springfield Armory M21 Capacity
The M21 is chambered in 7.62x51mmNATO (.308 Winchester) and shares magazine commonality with the M14 rifle giving it a standard capacity of 20 rounds. 5 and 10 round magazines are available due to the civilian market being subject to magazine restrictions both for general purchase as well as from hunting restrictions.
Springfield Armory M21 Feature
The Springfield M21 is a gas-operated select-fire rifle that operates on a gas tappet / op-rod mechanism with a 2-lug rotating bolt. The M21 is simply an accurized M14 with a scope on top and has 100% parts commonality. The stock is accurized by way of glass bedding that effectively glues the receiver into the stock. With the improved trigger, the M21 offers 1.5 to 2 MOA accuracy instead of the 3 to 5 MOA groups found with the M14.
Springfield Armory M21 Ergonomics
The M21 has identical controls to the M14 though the stocks can sometimes be found with built-in cheek risers as well as hand-made risers made of foam padding and duct tape. Just like the M14, the M21 has a magazine release between the trigger guard and the mag well, a reciprocating charging handle, a fire selector next to the rear sight and a safety that flips between the inside and outside of the front of the trigger guard.
Springfield Armory M21 Mobility
The M21 measures 44 inches long and has an unloaded weight between 13 and 19 pounds with a scope. The weight isn’t highly dependent on the scope as many typically only weigh up to two pounds; the extreme weight is due to the wooden stock being impregnated with fiberglass resin in an attempt to accurize it. Once an M14 was selected to be turned into an M21, resin was added until it was accurate enough to pass muster, thus the widely varying weight.
Springfield Armory M21 Fit-N-Finish
The M21 is an incredibly durable rifle with a parkerized receiver made of 8620 steel alloy and an American walnut stock. The M21 cannot be fully field stripped due to the bedding applied in the accurizing process; if you separate the receiver from the stock, you lose all of the accurizing benefits.
