The M&P R8 is chambered for .357 Magnum and fires from an 8 round cylinder that has no problem handling +P loads. Due to the nature of rimmed cartridges and revolvers, this gun can also fire .38 Special cartridges with no issues. This allows users to take advantage of the low-recoiling “cowboy action loads” and wad-cutters that are popular among users who appreciate plenty of range time.
Smith & Wesson M&P R8 Feature
The Smith & Wesson M&P R8 is a full-sized N-frame revolver that was designed for open carry and police duty. Built with a 5 inch barrel topped with fully-adjustable iron sights, the R8 fires from either a single- or double-action trigger pull. If the iron sights aren’t enough, there is a section of picatinny rail under the muzzle that allows users to mount a laser sighting system.
Smith & Wesson M&P R8 Ergonomics
The M&P R8 has a full-size grip with a high-traction G10 Hogue rubber coating that provides an excellent grip even if your hands are sweaty, knees are weak and mom’s spaghetti. The controls are pretty typical for a S&W revolver and the hammer has a checkered surface to pull it back without NDing. The trigger pull in single-action is crisp with a heavier break than other revolvers (for safety?) and the double-action pull is a bit heavier than normal with an incredibly smooth path.
Smith & Wesson M&P R8 Concealability
The M&P R8 measures 10.5 inches long, 6.1 inches tall and 1.7 inches wide so unless you’re planning to conceal this under a slightly oversized jacket in a shoulder holster, you’ll be limited to carrying it in an open-carry setup.
Smith & Wesson M&P R8 Fit-N-Finish
M&P series revolvers are some of the most durable and reliable guns that Smith & Wesson have ever made short of their Performance Center models. The R8 has a unique coating on all of the steel components that make it impervious to rust from rain or humidity, and the barrel and cylinder are made of stainless steel in order to limit potential damage such as corrosion from spent powder.
