The Ruchnoy Pulemyot Degtyaryova, known to most simply as the RPD, was developed from 1943 to 1944 alongside the 7.62x39mm M43 cartridge in the Soviet Union by Vasily Degtyaryov. While it was ready for mass production in 1944, it wasn't actually produced until after its adoption in 1948. This kept it from seeing frontline service in WWII. The RPD maintained frontline deployment with the Soviets until 1960 when it was replaced with the beefed-up AKM pattern RPK. The now obsolescent RPDs would get sold off to middle-eastern, South Asian and African nations who had ties with the USSR.

RPD Features

The RPD is a fully-automatic belt fed machine gun that operates on a flapper-locked action with a long stroke gas piston just like the DShK and DP27 machine guns that were also designed by Degtyaryov.  The RPD has a 20.5 inch barrel paired with range- and windage-adjustable iron sights and a folding bipod affixed just behind the gas block.

RPD Capacity

The RPD is chambered in 7.62x39mm and feeds from 100 round non-disintegrating belts.  These are stored in round cans that attach to the bottom of the receiver while the belt is fed by the operator up into the feed tray.  Fun fact: Israel got their hands on some of these and actually created a version chambered in 5.56x45mmNATO and there is little to no info on it.

Measuring 40.8 inches long with an unloaded weight of 16.3 pounds and a weight exceeding 20 pounds when loaded, the RPD offers an impressive level of mobility for a squad automatic weapon.  Its reduced length allowed for better movement through urban and jungle environments and its reduced weight, all when compared to the DP28, allows for an easier time carrying the gun.

RPD Ergonomics

Ergonomics
The RPD is unique in its appearance more often than not for its incredibly short handguard that measures only about 5 inches long.  This is due to its intended role not including firing from the shoulder, opting for supported firing positions with the bipod or other support.  It can, however, be fired from the hip with the use of a sling rather effectively.

RPD Fit & Finish

The RPD was rather advanced in its design employing multiple stamped components as well as dust covers to keep foreign materials from entering the action.  The grip and handguard are made of laminate wood and are probably now found soaked through with cosmoline.  All of the steel parts feature a black phosphate finish and the stainless steel parts that make up the bolt assembly are chrome plated in propper Soviet fashion.
