See DealThe STEN is an open-bolt submachine gun designed and produced in the United Kingdom during WWII. Its name is derived from the combination of Shepard, Turpin (the names of the designers) and Enfield (EN). The STEN was designed to be produced cheaply and quickly, an achievement exhibited in all iterations of the gun. The Mk.III was the third production design of the STEN.

Royal Small Arms Sten Mk Iii Capacity
The STEN is chambered in 9x19mm Parabellum and feeds from double-stack, single-feed stamped steel magazines with a 32 round capacity. While holding the STEN by the pistol grip and the magazine seems intuitive, the stress caused from holding the magazine while firing would quickly wear out the magazine release mechanism.
Royal Small Arms Sten Mk Iii Feature
The STEN Mk.III is a fully-automatic 9mm submachine gun that operates on a direct blowback action and fires from an open bolt. The STEN is built with a 7.7 inch barrel topped with non-adjustable iron sights and is fed from a side-mounted magazine that is based on the German MP18.
Royal Small Arms Sten Mk Iii Ergonomics
The STEN, with its side mounted magazine, has an unconventional control layout. The magazine release is located on the top of the mag well. The reciprocating charging handle is located on the right side of the gun and can be pulled back and up into a slot to lock the bolt back. The stamped pistol grip is cut from a plate of steel and is welded onto the stock that is made from a 15mm tube.
Royal Small Arms Sten Mk Iii Mobility
Measuring an impressively short 30 inches long with an unloaded weight of 7.1 pounds, the STEN offers the best mobility out of any submachine gun in WWII. Its light weight and short overall length made it an excellent easy-to-carry weapon for use by British troops as well as resistance fighters. Its short length also made it easy to use in close-quarter environments such as houses, alleys and tunnels.
Royal Small Arms Sten Mk Iii Fit-N-Finish
The STEN was designed to be easily, quickly and cheaply made, and this resulted in a gun that cost $11 (approx. $200 today) to produce and could be built in about 5 hours. Over 2 million STEN Mk.III’s have been made and they all have very crude welded assemblies, but that’s what you get when you design a gun that is made out of bits of plumbing from a hardware store.
