Ballistic Stats
The PPS-42 was designed in 1942 by the legendary Russian gun designer Alexei Sudayev. Produced from 1942 until 1946 in the Soviet Union, the submachine gun saw service in every major battle against the German Wehrmacht. De-milled semi-automatic-only pistol versions (stock folded and welded in place) have been imported into the United States through a handful of companies for civilian purchase.

Pps-42 Capacity
The PPS42 is chambered in 7.62x25mm Tokarev and feeds from double-feed detachable box magazines with a 35 round capacity. Unlike the PPSh-41, the PPS42 is not designed to accept drum magazines and instead feeds from lighter curved box magazines. The 42’s lower rate of fire negated the need for large, clunky and unreliable drum magazines.
Pps-42 Feature
The PPS42 was designed by Alexei Sudayev as a cheaper and easier to produce replacement for the PPSh-41 that required fewer parts and less skilled labor to manufacture. Retaining the open bolt and direct blowback action, the PPS42 opts for a pistol grip and folding stock along with a slimmed down receiver. The PPS is built with a 10 inch barrel with a more effective handguard.
Pps-42 Ergonomics
The PPS42 was designed to be quick and easy to make, so ergonomics were hardly considered in the design. Aside from the pistol grip that has relatively modern contours, the rest of the gun is rather clumsy in its handling. The only place your support hand can rest is around the magazine well due to the reciprocating charging handle, and the folding stock fails to offer a comfortable and useable cheek weld.
Pps-42 Mobility
Measuring 35.7 inches long with its stock extended and 25.2 inches folded with an unloaded weight of 6.5 pounds, the PPS42 is one of the lightest WWII submachine guns even though it’s one of the longest. The light weight of the gun was a beloved feature by the soldiers who had to carry it over long distances when their other options would have been a 10 pound rifle or an 8 pound SMG with magazines that didn’t work.
Pps-42 Fit-N-Finish
The PPS42 is made almost entirely from stamped steel aside from its barrel. Bolt and recoil springs. This gun has a rather heavy trigger and a reciprocating charging handle with an incredibly long length of travel, all of this to reduce the rate of fire. Because of the low fire rate and long bolt travel, the recoil generated by this gun is much softer than other SMGs of its time.
