The PM-63 was designed in the 1950's in Poland by Piotr Wilniewczyc who passed away before the gun was adopted by the Polish military. It was produced by FB Radom from 1963 until 1977 and its intended role was similar to that of the M1 carbine, FN P90 and HK MP7 where it would be issued as a defensive weapon for rear-echelon troops, drivers, artillery crews, etc.

PM-63 Features

The PM-63 is a select-fire personal defense weapon (PDW) that fires from the open bolt and is short-recoil operated.  Its 6 inch rotating barrel is accompanied by a blast deflector that helps reduce muzzle rise as well as protect the shooter’s hand when firing.  The collapsing stock folds up and tucks into the frame and is quickly deployed when needed.  The PM-63 is made with a progressive trigger that fires in semi-auto when pulled half way and fires in full-auto when fully pulled.

PM-63 Capacity

The PM-63 is chambered in 9x18mm Makarov and feeds from double-stack, single-feed magazines with a capacity of 15 rounds in a flush-fit magazine and a capacity of 25 rounds in an extended magazine.  These magazines are rather unique in the fact that the ejector that kicks the spent cases out of the gun is incorporated into one of the magazine’s feed lips.

Measuring 13.1 inches long with the stock tucked away or 23 inches with it extended and has an unloaded weight of 3.53 pounds leaving it firmly in the PDW category.  Its light weight and short length allow it to easily be carried on the hip when comparing it to lugging around an AK47, and its stock and folding front grip allow for accurate fire during close-up engagements.

PM-63 Ergonomics

Ergonomics
The PM-63 has a 90 degree grip angle on both its folding front grip and its pistol grip.  The collapsing stock offers plenty of clearance between the user’s face and the slide but many myths exist about people getting smacked in the face with the slide.  The magazine release is located on the bottom of the grip in similar fashion to an UZI or depression era pocket pistol.

PM-63 Fit & Finish

The PM-63 has one of the most interesting designs both in its looks and feel as well as its mechanics.  In the rearward portion of the slide sits a fire rate reducer that uses spring loaded weights to hold the slide back for a fraction of a second.  This reduces the rate of fire as well as allow the magazine to properly and fully lift the next round to the top of the magazine.
