The PKP "Pecheneg" is the latest development in the line of PK pattern general purpose machine guns in the Russian military. Replacing and making improvements on the PKM, the PKP offers better accuracy through the use of a heavier (and removable) barrel while also allowing the user to attach optics to the gun. In addition to being man-portable, the PKP can also be mounted onto many different vehicles as well as set up on fixed firing positions.

PKP Pecheneg Features

The PKP is a fully-automatic, gas operated, belt-fed machine gun that operates on a long-stroke gas piston and 2-lug rotating bolt action.  Essentially, the action is based on an upside-down AK47 that has been beefed up to handle the hotter 7.62x54mmR cartridge.  It is built with a 25.9 inch barrel that actually has an AK’s front sight block, and this barrel can be quickly switched to prevent overheating.  The PKP fires from the open bolt.

PKP Pecheneg Capacity

The PKP is chambered in 7.62x54mmR and feeds from non-disintegrating belts.  These belts can be set up to hold 50, 75, 100, 150 or 200 rounds.  Most of these belts are carried in metal ammo boxes that have a shoulder strap for easy carrying.  Unlike most machine guns, the PKP feeds its belts into the gun from the right side as opposed to the left.  This is done so the assistant gunner can perform more reload actions with their dominant hand.

Measuring 47 inches long with an unloaded weight of 19 pounds, the PKP is easily maneuvered by a small machine gun crew.  While its length restricts its use from close-quarter environments and causes difficulty climbing in and out of vehicles (excluding white pickup truck beds full of sand), its use in open terrain is anything but difficult.  It can also be mounted onto tripods and other vehicle mounts.

PKP Pecheneg Mobility

Mobility

PKP Pecheneg Ergonomics

Ergonomics
The PKP lacks a front handguard which requires its users to grip the gun by the pistol grip and the stock.  Luckily, there are 4 different places a user can place their support hand thanks to the stock’s unique shape.  The PKP can also be fired from the hip with the use of a sling where the user tucks the stock between their torso and elbow and holds on for dear life on the pistol grip and barrel handle.

PKP Pecheneg Fit & Finish

The PKP has many improvements over its predecessor, the PKM.  Its barrel is heavier allowing for more sustained and accurate fire, its barrel handle was redesigned to be stronger, more sturdy, and to keep it from protruding out allowing it to catch on stuff, and the gun is also built with composite furniture.  Its receiver, just like the AK47 its design is based on, is made of stamped steel.
