The American-180 is a submachine gun developed in the 1960s which fires .22 LR cartridges from a pan magazine. The concept began with the Casull Model 290 that used a flat pan magazine similar to designs widely used prior to World War II. Only 80 Casull M290s were built as the weapon was expensive to produce. The American-180 is an improved version. A semi-automatic only variant called the American SAR 180/275 is still produced on a custom basis by E&L Manufacturing of Riddle, Oregon.

North American Arms American 180 Features

The North American Arms American 180 is a fully-automatic .22 caliber machine gun that fires from the open bolt.  The 180 has an incredibly high fire rate at around 1500 rounds per minute and has a report that has been described as sounding like “a swarm of angry bees”.  This gun operates on a direct-blowback action and is built with an 18.5 inch ribbed barrel.

North American Arms American 180 Capacity

The American 180 is chambered in the cheap and plentiful .22LR and feeds from unique rotating pan-style magazines that have a spiraling internal track allowing for multiple layers of ammo to be loaded.  The American 180 has two magazine sizes with the smaller drum holding 175 rounds and the larger holding 275 rounds.
Measuring 35.5 inches long with an unloaded weight of 5.7 pounds (and a fully loaded weight under 7 pounds), the American 180 is one of the lightest shoulder-fired machine guns ever made.  Its short length and light weight made it popular with prison guards and with police officers operating in dense urban areas.

Ergonomics
The American 180 has a very similar look and feel to the M1927 Tommy Gun with a different control setup.  The magazine is top-loaded with the drum release lever located on the top of the receiver and a charging handle located on the left side of the receiver.  The stock also doesn’t drop horribly like the Tommy Gun.  The 180 is available with different forends that can be switched out with reasonable speed.

North American Arms American 180 Fit & Finish

Fewer than 10,000 American 180’s were ever produced and they were all manufactured to different standards.  It’s not a case of early vs late production either; some of them just weren’t made well and their performance suffers.
