Mossberg 500 Capacity
The Mossberg 500 can be found chambered for 12 gauge, 20 gauge and .410 bore and feeds from a fixed tube magazine. Due to the modularity and variety of the platform, the capacities of the magazine tubes can range from 4 to 8 rounds when loaded with 2-¾” shells and one round less in the same tube with 3” shells. Unlike the newer 590 series shotgun, the Mosberg 500 cannot be set up with magazine tube extensions.
Mossberg 500 Feature
The Mossberg 500 is a series of pump action shotguns whose design is nearly as modular as the AR15. This versatility allows the 500 to be built into a wide variety of setups to offer the best tool for the job whether it’s deer or bird hunting, pest control, competition, trap & skeet, home defense or as a truck gun. Many military and police units along with hunters and homeowners have employed the Mossberg 500 for a non-finite list of tasks.
Mossberg 500 Ergonomics
The Mossberg 500 can be built and rebuilt with a limitless variety of grips, handguards and stocks, however the controls remain the same. The safety is located on the top of the receiver near the stock, and the pump release lever is located just left of the back of the trigger guard. Typical off-the-shelf 500 series shotguns have a Monte-Carlo style stock with a half-pistol grip and have a wide forend or a low-profile, ribbed forend depending on the model you buy.
Mossberg 500 Mobility
Most Mossberg 500 shotguns weigh 6 to 7 pounds depending on the parts that make up the complete gun and their length varies for the same reason. Overall lengths can be as short as 26.5 inches for the compact home defense guns while the deer guns with 20 inch barrels measure 40 inches long, and the trap guns with the 28 and 32 inch barrels can easily exceed 4 feet in length.
Mossberg 500 Concealability
Some models of the Mossberg 500, known as the “Cruiser” model, exchange the stock for a pistol grip and the longer barrel for a short 18.5 inch one giving it an overall length of 26.5 inches. While this keeps it too long to conceal in your pants, it does allow the shotgun to easily be stored in a vehicle or on the top shelf of a closet for easy access.
Mossberg 500 Fit-N-Finish
The Mossberg 500 uses an alloy receiver that is very resistant to deformation. Unlike other shotguns, almost nothing on the 500 is welded so if a part happens to break, a skilled gunsmith can easily change out any part of this shotgun in under 15 minutes. Wood stocks and handguards are often made from American Walnut while the plastic stocks are made of a high-strength composite.
