The M91/30 is the most prolific version of the Mosin–Nagant. It was produced for standard issue to all Soviet infantry from 1930 to 1945. Most Dragoon rifles were also converted to the M1891/30 standard. It was commonly used as a sniper rifle in World War II. Early sniper versions had a 3.87×30 PE or PEM scope, a Soviet-made copy of a Zeiss design, while later rifles used smaller, simpler, and easier-to-produce 3.5×21 PU scopes. Because the scope was mounted above the chamber, the bolt handle was replaced with a longer handled, bent version on sniper rifles (known to Mosin collectors and shooters as a "bent bolt") so the shooter could work the bolt without the scope interfering with it. Like the US M1903A4 Springfield sniper rifle, the location of the scope above the receiver prevents the use of stripper clips.

Mosin Nagant M91/30 Features

The Mosin Nagant M91/30 is the most common of the Russian-produced Mosin rifles and is a variant of the longest-serving rifle design in history with more than 100 years of frontline use in various roles.  This bolt-action rifle is built with a 29 inch barrel topped with a hooded front sight and rear sight leaf that adjusts for range out to 2000 meters.

Mosin Nagant M91/30 Capacity

The Mosin Nagant is chambered in 7.62x54mmR and feeds from an internal 5-round single-stack magazine.  Rounds can be loaded one-by-one into the magazine or all 5 rounds can be loaded at once with the aid of stripper clips.  Rounds can easily be removed from the magazine by opening the floor plate under the magazine.
With an unloaded weight just shy of 9 pounds and an overall length of 48.5 inches, the M91/30 offers the worst stats for mobility out of all WWII bolt-action standard infantry rifles.  The sub-par design, ergonomics and manufacturing of the rifle were only made up for by the sheer quantity of the rifle with over 10 million produced between 1930 and 1945 when Soviet armories began producing the SKS rifle.

Mosin Nagant M91/30 Ergonomics

Ergonomics
The M91/30 features a straight-grip stock and a straight bolt handle that has a 90 degree throw.  The steep angles and commonly rough contacting surfaces offer a very clunky bolt that is difficult to cycle without taking the gun off of your shoulder.  While the balance and feel of the rifle is sufficient for many users, the incredibly long trigger pull that lacks a wall reduces end-user accuracy for most shooters.

Mosin Nagant M91/30 Fit & Finish

The M91/30 is made of carbon steel components that feature a blued surface finish with a stainless steel bolt.  The stock of the M91/30 can either be cut from a solid block of wood or it can be laminate like plywood, either option often found smothered in cosmoline.  This can be removed by disassembling the gun and using a mild heat source and a lot of rags.
