Mosin Nagant M91/30 Sniper 7.62x54r Very Good Features

The Mosin Nagant M91/30 is the bolt action rifle that was the standard infantry rifle for the Soviet Union during World War II.  It is built with a 29 inch barrel topped with a hooded front sight and range-adjustable rear sight that goes from 100 to 2,000 meters.  It’s not accurate as a point-target rifle at that range, but you can still somewhat accurately volley it.  These rifles are often found smothered in cosmoline after sitting in Russian warehouses for decades before finally being imported into the US for commercial sales.  These often sell with a bayonet that wraps around the barrel and front sight post and they sometimes come with an oil container and ammo pouch.

Mosin Nagant M91/30 Sniper 7.62x54r Very Good Capacity

The Mosin Nagant is chambered in 7.62x54mmR which is a full-power rifle round with a rimmed case (hence the R).  The M91/30 has a fixed magazine with a 5 round capacity which is loaded from the top either one round at a time or loaded from the top with the help of a 5 round stripper clip.  These clips are made of a rather thin aluminum and can begin to split rather easily, and if they’re not loaded properly, you can improperly stack your rounds and end up with rim lock, so make sure you get plenty of range time in before you go deer hunting or take the rifle to a shooting competition.
The Garbage Rod measures 48.5 inches long and has an unloaded weight of 8.8 pounds making it the heaviest standard issue bolt action infantry rifles of WWII.  With the bayonet attached, the overall length extends over 5 feet long, and surprisingly that’s the only way for the iron sights to technically work.  Between the strange reload from obsolete ammo to cycling the clunky bolt to trying to walk between trees with a 4 foot long 9 pound gun, the mobility of the Mosin is incredibly low.

Mosin Nagant M91/30 Sniper 7.62x54r Very Good Ergonomics

Ergonomics
The Moist Nugget has a rather nice balance to it, however that’s where the ergonomics seem to end.  The steel buttplate does nothing to help with the high recoil (Russians wear puffy coats a lot, so…), the straight-grip stock is less than comfortable, the trigger is smooth but its pull is long and you can’t feel a wall to anticipate the break, the bolts are clunky and awkward unlike the smooth Mauser bolts (also the handle is really far forward), and the groove in the stock that was made for a hand grip is largely ineffective.  While a mechanical safety is not plainly visible, one does exist.  By pulling the rearward-most piece of the bolt back that contains the firing pin and sear and rotating it counter-clockwise, it will rest on the flat of the receiver locking the bolt in place and you’ll have a dead trigger.

Mosin Nagant M91/30 Sniper 7.62x54r Very Good Fit & Finish

The M91/30 can be found with three different stocks that include two made of wood or a composite Archangel stock.  The wood stocks can be made of a solid chunk of wood or they can be cut into a laminate stock, and all too often you’ll find stocks that are sporterized (a.k.a. worth less money).  These stocks are embedded with cosmoline which can be bled out by leaving the stock in the sun for a few days, constantly wiping the cosmoline off with rags.  These rifles are incredibly durable and have a chrome-lined bolt, but there isn’t anything nice about these rifles other than their historically low resale cost.  The bolts are clunky, the grip is awkward, and the triggers are weird.
