The Mosin Nagant M44 Carbine is a Russian/Soviet carbine-length, bolt action rifle in 7.62x54R. It’s a shorter, carbine version to the longer Mosin M1891s and 91/30s. While the M38 was made from 1938-45, the M44 was a late WWII modification that was only produced in Russia from 1944-48. Other communist countries and Satellite soviet states also produced variants of the M44. The main difference with the M44 is that it uses a sturdy side-folding bayonet instead of the detachable style that most Mosins come with.

Mosin Nagant M44 Features

The Mosin Nagant M44 is the shortest of the Russian-produced Mosin rifles and is a variant of the longest-serving rifle design in history with more than 100 years of frontline use in various roles.  This bolt-action rifle is built with a 20.2 inch barrel topped with a hooded front sight and rear sight leaf that adjusts for range out to 2000 meters.  Russian and Chinese M44 rifles are also equipped with a side-folding bayonet mount.

Mosin Nagant M44 Capacity

The Mosin Nagant is chambered in 7.62x54mmR and feeds from an internal 5-round single-stack magazine.  Rounds can be loaded one-by-one into the magazine or all 5 rounds can be loaded at once with the aid of stripper clips.  Rounds can easily be removed from the magazine by opening the floor plate under the magazine.

With an unloaded weight just shy of 8 pounds and an overall length of 40 inches, the M44 offers the best mobility performance of any WWII infantry rifle.  This rifle’s short overall length allowed Russian troops to more easily navigate the close-quarter environments of eastern European cities during the later days of WWII.

Mosin Nagant M44 Ergonomics

Ergonomics
The M44 features a straight-grip stock and a straight bolt handle that has a 90 degree throw.  The steep angles and commonly rough contacting surfaces offer a very clunky bolt that is difficult to cycle without taking the gun off of your shoulder.  While the balance and feel of the rifle is sufficient for many users, the incredibly long trigger pull that lacks a wall reduces end-user accuracy for most shooters.

Mosin Nagant M44 Fit & Finish

The M44 is made of carbon steel components that feature a blued surface finish with a stainless steel bolt.  The stock of the M44 can either be cut from a solid block of wood or it can be laminate like plywood, either option often found smothered in cosmoline.  This can be removed by disassembling the gun and using a mild heat source and a lot of rags.
