The MG3 ("Machinengewehr Modell 3") is a general-purpose (recoil-operated, roller locked) machine gun chambered for the 7.62×51mm NATO cartridge. Made by Rheinmetall in Germany, it was designed in 1959. It is derived from the World War II era MG 42 universal machine gun that fired the 7.92×57mm Mauser round. Manufacturing started in 1968 by Rheinmetall and lasted until 1979 but later also it was license-built by: Beretta, MKEK, Ellinika Amyntika Systimata, Defense Industries Organization, Military Industry Corporation, Pakistan Ordnance Factories and General Dynamics Santa Bárbara Sistemas. The MG3 was introduced into service of Bundeswehr in 1968. The MG 3 is an automatic, air-cooled, belt-fed short recoil-operated firearm. The machine gun has an automatic-only trigger mechanism and a cross-bolt safety in the form of a button that is operated by the shooting hand (in its "safe" position the bolt release is disabled). The weapon fires from an open bolt. The cyclic rate can be altered by installing different bolts and recoil springs. The MG 3 has a quick-change, chrome-lined barrel with four right-hand grooves and a rifling twist rate of 1 in 305 mm (1:12 in).

Rheinmetall MG3 Features

The Rheinmetall MG3 is a fully-automatic, belt-fed, gas-operated machine gun that operates on a roller-locked action.  Reverse-engineered from the infamous MG42, the MG3 has a slower fire rate of 800 to 900 rounds per minute, about 75% of its predecessor, which allows for much more accurate fire and better ammo conservation.  It has a 22” quick-detaching barrel that swaps out identically to the MG42.

Rheinmetall MG3 Capacity

The MG3 is chambered in 7.62x51mmNATO and can feed from two different types of belts.  It can feed from non-disintegrating 50 and 75 round belts in a similar fashion to the MG42, and it can also feed from belts connected with M13 links, where there’s really no limit to capacity.  Each has its pros and cons, though the use of M13 links allows the MG3 to use any other NATO military’s linked 7.62 ammo.
Measuring 48.2 inches long with an unloaded weight of 25.4 pounds, the MG3 is the second-longest current-issue man-portable machine gun in service with NATO countries, and it’s also one of the heaviest.  While this weight does help to tame the recoil, the easiest way to move the gun is by mounting it onto a vehicle, which can be done with a few pins.

Rheinmetall MG3 Ergonomics

Ergonomics
There are almost no changes in ergonomics between the MG42 and MG3.  The grip is the same, the controls are identical, and there’s still no front grip.  It even retained the free-swinging bipod that allows the recoil to push the user back, changing the angle of the legs and thus the point of aim.

Rheinmetall MG3 Fit & Finish

The MG3 has a receiver set that is made almost entirely out of stamped sheet steel.  Certain changes internally were made to reduce the fire rate including a change in the diameter of the gas port.  Aside from that and some new advancements in metallurgy, the MG3 is built with the same degree of quality as the MG42 was all of those years ago.
