The Mauser C96 (commonly called the "Broomhandle" or "Broomhandle Mauser" due to its distinctive grip), was a German semi-automatic pistol, developed in 1893-1895, and manufactured from 1896 to circa 1937. The C96 Mauser was one of the first semi-automatic pistols to see widespread use and was copied in Spain and China. In China, C96 and variants have the nickname "box cannon," with various explanations for this being either the weapon's weight (2 pounds heavier than the 9mm or 7.63mm variants), its boxy

Mauser C96 Capacity
The Mauser C96 is chambered in 7.63x25mm Mauser and feeds from a fixed 10 round double-stack, double-feed magazine located along the front of the frame. To load the magazine, the bolt must be locked to its rear of travel where rounds can be loaded one-by-one manually or 10 rounds can be quickly loaded with the use of a stripper clip.
Mauser C96 Feature
The Mauser C96 is a semi-automatic steel-framed pistol that operates on a short-recoil action with a locking wedge that is very similar in function to that of the Beretta 92 and is fired from a single-action trigger pull. This pistol is built with a 4 inch barrel topped with a range-adjustable rear sight leaf.
Mauser C96 Ergonomics
The Mauser C96 has an incredibly unique design against both the designs of its day and modern standards. Its charging handle is along the back of the slide and is easy to locate and pull, as is the hammer, and its trigger placement is located in a comfortable location, however the front-heavy balance and the unique “broomhandle” grip can leave much to be desired.
Mauser C96 Mobility
The Mauser C96 “Broomhandle” excelled in the trenches of the Great War thanks to its semi-automatic action and removable shoulder stock. Possibly the first successful PDW, the C96 allowed artillery crews, officers and trench-clearing troops a very stable and sufficiently accurate pistol that weighed less than 3 pounds.
Mauser C96 Fit-N-Finish
The Mauser C96 is built with a slot along the back of the grip that allows the user to attach the wooden shoulder stock that also doubles as a holster. Under very strict requirements that include more than a numbers-matching stock and pistol and manufacture date, some of these C96 examples are exempt from NFA SBR regulation due to their historical significance. However, this exemption is rare and expensive, so don’t fall prey to a scam that can land you in prison.
