The M249 SAW is a variant of the FN Minimi built for the US Military. Originally designed in 1976, the SAW was adopted in 1984 as a lighter and faster-firing replacement for the aging M60. It is currently slated to be replaced and phased out by the SIG Sauer XM250 but will likely be extending its service with Reserve and National Guard units well into its 4th decade of use.

M249 SAW Features

The M249 SAW is a fully-automatic belt fed machine gun that operates on a long-stroke gas piston with a multi-lug rotating bolt.  It is built with an 18 inch barrel that is paired with an adjustable gas system allowing the user to adjust the amount of gas going to the piston in order to affect the rate of fire.  The stock contains a hydraulic buffer to reduce the amount of felt recoil as well as reduce the amount of wear and tear on the gun.

M249 SAW Capacity

The M249 is chambered in 5.56x45mmNATO and can be fed by any box magazine that can fit in an AR15 or, as is appropriate, fed from belts of 5.56 ammo.  Though standard belts are assembled with 100 or 200 rounds, the magic of M27 links allows for a non-finite belt length.  You can give your targets the whole nine yards if you want (That’s where the term came from).  Be advised, your belt needs to be supported if it’s more than 30 rounds long as the bolt doesn’t have enough kinetic energy to reliably feed that much weight.

The M249 measures 40.75 inches long and has an unloaded weight of 17.2 pounds.  Naturally, it’s considerably heavier with a 100 round belt loaded in it.  It’s big and it’s heavy, but it is light enough to fire from the shoulder while being heavy enough to be reasonably controllable under sustained fire.  Thankfully, this chonky boi has a carry handle allowing you to switch off arms when carrying it over long distances.

M249 SAW Ergonomics

Ergonomics
The M249 has an FAL inspired pistol grip that fills the hand very well and has a buttstock that allows for a very comfortable cheek weld when you have the bipod deployed and have your support hand placed on the leg of the stock.  The stock is made of a composite material and includes a shoulder thing that goes up.  All of the controls are easy to find.  If you’re considering one of these, you probably already know how to operate it.

M249 SAW Fit & Finish

The SAW has a receiver made of stamped sheet steel that originally had a black phosphate coating.  Most M249’s now have much of that coating worn away from regular handling as well as spending two decades in the desert.  The feed tray cover is milled from a block of aluminum and usually has a hard anodize coating, though some of the SAWs made in the early 1990’s had painted covers that would be stripped if soldiers applied brake cleaner instead of CLP.
