Lewis Gun Features

The Lewis Gun is a fully-automatic gas operated machine gun with two very unique design features that include its pan style magazine and its shrouded barrel.  The shroud is made of aluminum and contains fins that act as a heat sink.  As the gun fires and the expanding gasses go forward, it begins to create a draft that pulls air from behind the gun forward around the barrel and out ahead of the muzzle.

Lewis Gun Capacity

The Lewis Gun is originally chambered in .303 British but has also been made in .30-06, 8x57 Mauser and 7.62x51mmR.  All of them use pan-style magazines offering capacities of 47 and 97 rounds.  The magazine itself sits on a mounting bracket containing a spring that automatically rotates the pan to load the next round into the chamber.

Measuring 50.5 inches long with an unloaded weight of 28 pounds, the Lewis Gun was not necessarily meant to be fired from the shoulder.  In an effort to negate the need for a water-cooling system, the barrel shroud was added, but this still left a considerable amount of weight to the gun.  As it would heat up, it couldn’t be safely handled, so some soldiers would add a long sling to the gun to allow them to fire it from the hip.

Lewis Gun Ergonomics

Ergonomics
The Lewis Gun is one of those general-purpose machine guns that lacks any useable front grip.  As it is too heavy to be fired from the shoulder, operators would use the attached bipod or a standalone tripod to mount the gun, then they would hold the pistol grip with their right hand and place their left hand on the stock to steady their shots.

Lewis Gun Fit & Finish

The Lewis Gun had a very unique look due to its barrel shroud, and that gave it a very futuristic look.  Even today, the gun appears otherworldly.  This gun made of tubes and milled steel parts has been adapted in many sci-fi films including Star Wars due to its strange appearance, and the gun’s durability allowed it to appear in films long after it was put into retirement.
