The L86 Light Support Weapon (LSW) is a variant on the SA80 also known as the L85. It was adopted by the British military in 1984 with production ending in 1994 with approximately 30,000 units produced. The L86 is essentially a longer-barreled version of the L85 with an attached bipod. Due to reliability and performance issues, the L86 was phased out of frontline service in favor of the FN Minimi (M249).

L86 Lsw Capacity
The L86 feeds from AR15/M16/M4 STANAG pattern magazines giving it a standard capacity of 30 rounds. 75-round drum magazines do exist for the gun, but due to the unreliable nature of drum magazines, the questionable reliability of the SA80 platform and its bullpup configuration that would lead to bad ergonomics, the only magazines that are used are the 30 rounders.
L86 Lsw Feature
The L86 Light Support Weapon is a short-stroke piston driven gas operated rifle with a multi-lug rotating bolt action that is directly based off of Eugene Stoner’s AR18. With a longer 25.4 inch barrel and integrated bipod, the L86 is a select-fire squad support weapon that provides a much more stable platform for engaging the enemy at longer distances under sustained automatic fire.
L86 Lsw Ergonomics
The L86 has an identical control layout to the L85 including its inability to be fired left-handed, its bolt release that is on the wrong side, its magazine release that can be engaged by holding the weapon too close to your plates and a trigger that is just awful. The longer barrel gives the LSW a more front-heavy balance, though the added weight does well to reduce recoil.
L86 Lsw Mobility
The L86 has an unloaded weight that slightly exceeds 15 pounds and approaches 17 pounds when fitted with an optic and loaded with a full magazine. Thanks to its bullpup design, the L86 only measures approximately 35.4 inches long giving it a similar overall length to a typical M4. The extra weight from the longer barrel will definitely cause extra fatigue compared to the L85.
L86 Lsw Fit-N-Finish
The L86 LSW fell victim to the same problems as the L85 and was re-worked by Heckler & Koch, GmbH in an attempt to correct the reliability issues. With its inability to reliably run drum magazines, the L86 was quickly relegated to rear-echelon units and was replaced in frontline service by the FN Minimi.
