The Karabiner 98 kurz , often abbreviated Karabiner 98k, Kar98k or K98k and also sometimes incorrectly referred to as a K98, is a bolt-action rifle chambered for the 7.92×57mm Mauser cartridge. It was adopted on 21 June 1935 as the standard service rifle by the German Wehrmacht. Karabiner 98K Capacity

The 98k is chambered in 7.92x57mm (8mm Mauser) and feeds from a double-stack 5 round internal magazine.  This rifle can be loaded by two methods, both with the bolt pulled back to the rear: you can manually load rounds one-by-one into the magazine or by way of 5-round stripper clip to speed load 5 rounds directly into the magazine.

Karabiner 98K Feature

The Mauser 1898 Karabiner, also known by many other names including K98k, 98k, Karabiner, and many others, is by far the most influential bolt action rifle ever designed.  The original model 1898 had to be shortened to re-define it as a carbine to circumvent the Treaty of Versailles leaving the 98k with a 23.6 inch barrel.  The rear sight was upgraded to a tangent leaf sight with a square notch paired with a hooded front sight.

Karabiner 98K Ergonomics

The Kar98k has a half-pistol grip and a stock that offers a very slight drop that eases the blow from the recoil without causing discomfort to the user’s cheek bones.  The bolt handle sits right over the trigger for an easy transition when cycling the action, and the 3-position safety at the rear of the bolt allows the user to lock the entire gun or bypass the trigger while being able to cycle the action.

Karabiner 98K Mobility

With an overall length of 43.7 inches and a weight from 8.2 to 9 pounds depending on the setup, this rifle is just about as easy to carry around as an M1 garand.  Even today, this rifle is light enough to take into the woods while out deer hunting without causing undue fatigue.

Karabiner 98K Fit-N-Finish

Today, Mauser 98k carbines can be found with conditions ranging from excellent to covered in rust.  Some of them have the evil mustache man symbol on them, some of those are scratched off.  Some 98k carbines are found sporterized, a barbaric practice where wood was chopped off to lighten the gun and make it look more commercial.  Don’t let anyone tell you “son, I know what I got” when you’re looking to buy any surplus rifle…sporterizing destroys the historical value.
