HK MG4 (HK123) Features

The Heckler & Koch MG4 is a gas-operated, belt-fed light machine gun that is slated to fully replace the MG3 in frontline infantry use with the German Bundeswehr.  It is built with a 17.7 inch quick-detaching barrel that includes a fully-adjustable flip-up front sight, allowing the user to zero their sights with multiple barrels.  The MG4 is also built with a folding stock for easier storage and better mobility.

HK MG4 (HK123) Capacity

The HK MG4 is chambered in 5.56x45mmNATO and is fed by belts of linked ammo connected by M27 links.  Standard-size ammo containers hold 100 round belts inside a box that clips into the underside of the receiver, though there’s nothing stopping an operator from linking as many rounds together as he wants.  The barrels can handle about 200 rounds of cyclic fire before they need to be swapped out to avoid damage from overheating.

Measuring 40.5 inches long (33 inches with the stock folded) with an unloaded weight just shy of 18 pounds, the MG4 falls only slightly behind in mobility when compared against the M249 SAW.  It makes up for this drawback with its folding stock which gives it superior maneuverability while navigating through close-quarter environments and while jumping out of planes.

HK MG4 (HK123) Ergonomics

Ergonomics
The MG3 offers superior ergonomics over similar light machine guns.  The folding stock has a contoured comb similar to the M240 and a buttpad placement that is in-line with the bore.  While this does increase felt recoil slightly, it also improves controllability.  The pistol grip is clearly inspired by the MP5 and G3 rifles, and the front handguard is contoured with the intention of allowing the users to fire the gun from the shoulder.

HK MG4 (HK123) Fit & Finish

There’s two types of German tradition in the firearms world, and that includes superior craftsmanship and not asking the personal beliefs or previous employment of their engineers.  Both of these made Heckler & Koch into one of the best firearm companies, and that quality shows itself yet again in the MG4.
