The FN Heat Adaptive Modular Rifle (HAMR) is a prototype weapon that began its development as a joint project between FN Herstal and FN America. It began development in 2008 and was entered into the US Army's IAR trial where it lost to the HK M27 rifle. It is still known to be under development as of 2018 when FN submitted an updated version of the machine gun for the US Army's NGSW trial where it was beat out by the SIG MCX Spear and XM250.

FN HAMR Features

The FN HAMR is most easily described as an improved SCAR-L with a unique trigger system.  The HAMR has a mechanism inside of it that, once the barrel has heats up enough, will switch it from firing from a closed bolt to firing from the open bolt.  This helps keep the barrel cool under sustained fire while providing accurate fire when the barrel is cold.

FN HAMR Capacity

The FN HAMR is chambered in 5.56x45mmNATO and feeds from AR15/M16 pattern magazines giving it a standard capacity of 30 rounds.  With identical dimensions to an AR15 magazine well, the HAMR can also accept 60 round drum magazines as well as the 60 and 100 round quad-stack magazines.  While these have their own reliability issues, the HAMR’s slower open-bolt firing mode would likely feed reliably once it switches over.

With an unloaded weight of 11.2 pounds and an overall length of 38 inches (with stock extended), the FN HAMR provides belt-fed firepower with the mobility and handling of a heavy rifle.  The increased weight also helps control the recoil under sustained fire to promote more proficient fire suppression.

FN HAMR Ergonomics

Ergonomics
All of the controls of the HAMR are identical to the SCAR-L and SCAR-16S as are the contours and geometry of the receivers.  The only ergonomic differences are the slightly-more front-heavy balance, the higher weight and the increased height of the front handguard.

FN HAMR Fit & Finish

The FN HAMR is made with the same unparalleled quality as the other members of the FN SCAR family.  It is built with a monolithic upper receiver made of magnesium, an aluminum lower receiver, that Ugg boot shaped composite stock, and a barrel guranteed to shoot 1MOA groups right out of the box with quality ammo.
