The FN FAL is known as "the right arm of the free world" due to its exceptional performance and its adoption by the majority of NATO-allied countries. This rifle was the standard infantry rifle for adopting countries beginning in the mid-1950's and is still used by some nations in standard and specialized roles. The FAL was produced under two main patterns currently referred to as "Inch" and "Metric" patterns and was produced in both semi-automatic only models as well as select-fire models

Fn Fal Capacity
The FN FAL is chambered in 7.62x51mmNATO and has a standard magazine capacity of 20 rounds. These magazines are available under “inch” and “metric” patterns and are not interchangeable. Shorter 5 and 10 round magazines are also available on the civilian market as well as 30-round magazines, however the 30-round magazines are incredibly rare.
Fn Fal Feature
The FN FAL is a short-stroke gas piston operated rifle that uses a tilting bolt action similar in function to the SVT-40 or SKS rifles. The action is heavily based on FN’s FN49 design and includes a 21 inch barrel topped with windage and range adjustable iron sights. The FAL has been adapted over the years with improvements such as folding stocks, new handguards, different barrel lengths and different optics mounting options, however the internal components remained largely the same.
Fn Fal Ergonomics
The FAL offered state-of-the-art ergonomics and controls when it was first adopted, and this control layout is still highly regarded even today as one of the best rifle setups. The safety is located on the left side of the trigger housing and can easily be switched with the user’s thumb, the magazine release is located behind the magazine and functions similarly to an AKM, and the side-mounted charging handle stays out of the way of optics. The grip and handguard are very comfortable in most hands, and the models with folding stocks offer a comfortable cheek weld.
Fn Fal Mobility
Although the FAL weighs 9.4 pounds making it nearly identical in weight to the M14 and measuring only 1 inch shorter at 43 inches, the FAL has superior mobility thanks to its control layout. For right-handed shooters, the FAL allows the operator to change magazines and chamber a round all with one hand in a much easier fashion than the M14.
Fn Fal Fit-N-Finish
The FAL has been improved over time to adapt to changes in how wars are fought including modern hardware attachment options, but there have been functional improvements as well. Many FAL bolt carriers have cuts in the side to remove sand, dust, dirt and other debris to improve the reliability, and more modern stocks have been adopted into the design as well. The receivers, barrels and other steel parts are blued or parkerized depending on the country of origin.
