The 502 MRD is designed for maximum fun, but don’t let great range days mislead you, this red-dot-ready rimfire is built with enduring accuracy and quality in mind, patterned after its big brother, the FN 509. The target-grade fire control delivers faster, more accurate shots from an optics-ready platform. Mounting a favorite red dot and cycling a wide range of .22 LR ammo makes a low-cost range day a high-end experience. Superior ergonomics and ambidextrous controls make it perfect for high round count training sessions.

FN 502 MRD Features

The FN 502 MRD is a semi-automatic, polymer-framed .22 caliber pistol that operates on a direct-blowback action and fires from a single-action trigger pull.  This pistol offers the same handling as its typical pistol-caliber bigger brothers in order to flatten the learning curve when switching to a 509, 510 or 545.  This pistol has a 4 inch barrel topped with suppressor-height iron sights on an optics-ready slide.  The polymer frame includes an accessory rail for mounting the same lasers or weapon lights as you would put on the pistols of a bigger caliber as well.

FN 502 MRD Capacity

The FN 502 MRD is chambered in .22LR and feeds from a single-stack 10 round magazine.  This gun was created with the express purpose of offering a fun and cheap to shoot version of the FN 500 series pistols such as the 509 and 545 while providing identical handling.  With this theory, users who insist on getting a lot of trigger time can easily recuperate their investment thanks to the low cost of the ammo for this gun and only periodically train with the larger caliber versions.

FN 502 MRD Ergonomics

Ergonomics
The FN 502 MRD has fully-ambidextrous controls that include a magazine release that can be engaged from either side without having to flip parts around, a slide release, and an optional thumb safety.  The slide has grip serrations that flank both the front and rear sights that offer plenty of grip when you need to manually cycle the action.  The backstrap along the grip is easily replaced with different size panels allowing the user to tailor the grip to their hand, and the texturing on the grip is a significant improvement over the FNS and FNX pistols.  The front and back side texturing has a shingled square pattern while the sides have flattened pyramids topped with a rippled thumb rest section.

FN 502 MRD Fit & Finish

The FN 502 MRD is manufactured by Umarex who are the go-to company for making .22 caliber versions of firearms in Europe.  It is available in all-black, black with a tan slide, and in the two-tone not-quite-matching tan-on-tan that FN was once mocked over but now everyone is doing it.  Unlike its 9mm, .45 caliber and 10mm bigger brothers the FN 502 MRD uses a fixed barrel instead of a tilting one.  This results in a much different disassembly and maintenance process, but it is still very simple.

FN 502 MRD Concealability

Concealability
While the FN 502 MRD is identical in size to the 509, 510 and 545 MRD models and can be easily concealed with the right choice of apparel and a good holster, there are some drawbacks to concealing a 502 MRD.  The first comes from its exposed hammer and taller iron sights that can easily cause some notable discomfort, and the other reason it’s a bad idea is because it’s a .22, which is trash when it comes to defensive carry.  This is a target and training pistol, not a viable concealed-carry weapon.
