Ballistic Stats
The DP-28 began its development cycle in 1927 and was adopted as the standard light machine gun for the Soviet infantry in 1928 and was later also adopted for mounted use on vehicles and aircraft. The DP-28 remained in service with reduced use as the RPD became available and was ultimately retired in 1961 when it was replaced by the RPK and PKM machine guns. Dp-28 Capacity
The DP-28 is chambered in 7.62x54mmR and feeds from a 47 round pan-style magazine. The pan has a spring-loaded winding mechanism that allows the entire pan to rotate on the mounting bracket in order to feed rounds into the chamber when the action is cycling. The magazine mounts to the gun from the front hook first and then the back is lowered into the latch.
Dp-28 Feature
The DP-28 is a fully-automatic gas-operated machine gun that operates on a long-stroke gas piston with a flapper-locked action. Its 23.8 inch barrel is paired with range-adjustable sights as well as a flash dissipator. This downward-ejecting gun is equipped with a folding bipod to offer a stable shooting position while firing.
Dp-28 Ergonomics
The DP-28 has a traditionally-inspired stock with a grip that is more appropriate for a typical rifle as opposed to a machine gun, though it does provide an angle that is more conducive to a proper trigger pull. The charging handle is located along the bottom of the gun on the right side and is attached to the piston.
Dp-28 Mobility
With an overall length of 50 inches and a loaded weight of 25 pounds, the DP28 is a very bulky weapon. Between the large ejection port along the bottom of the receiver, the reciprocating charging handle and the gas tube, there’s really nowhere to grab it when firing from the shoulder. This led many users to fire it from the hip with the use of a sling and a top-grasping support grip.
Dp-28 Fit-N-Finish
The DP-28 has a stamped metal handguard, a milled receiver and a cast trigger housing. The stock is made of the same wood used on solid (non-laminate) russian rifles. Some examples can have a pistol grip attached behind the trigger as they were fielded in WWII. Due to Degtyaryov’s incredibly durable flapper-locked design, the DP-28 has a very long lifespan.
