Colt M1911 A1 Features

The Colt M1911 was the standard-issue sidearm of the United States military from 1911 to 1985 with its A1 production model entering center stage in 1926.  The M1911A1 is a steel-framed semi-automatic pistol chambered in the caliber of our lord and savior John Moses Browning, .45ACP and operates on the Browning tilting-barrel short-recoil operating system.  This hand cannon has a 5 inch “government length” barrel topped with windage-adjustable sights.

Colt M1911 A1 Capacity

The Colt M1911 A1 is chambered in .45ACP and feeds from single-stack magazines.  The standard magazine capacity from its adoption was 7 rounds although advances in magazine design have allowed for an 8 round capacity in a magazine of the same overall size.

Colt M1911 A1 Ergonomics

Ergonomics
The Colt M1911A1 arguably has the most ergonomic grip and control layout ever devised, which explains why so many other guns have copied its design.  The checkered wood grips provide the user with plenty of control when firing, and the grip safety is easily disengaged with a decent grip when firing.  The single-action trigger has a very light and crisp pull which increases the gun’s inherent accuracy.

Colt M1911 A1 Fit & Finish

Most, if not all, M1911A1 examples are well-used and have plenty of wear.  Since this pistol was the standard sidearm for 74 years, all surplussed guns are going to have wear marks on virtually every part.  However, they typically work as well as they did back when Grandpa was stacking Nazis in France.  Fun fact: The government contract for this gun required an external safety, so Browning employed a grip safety.  Uncle Sam loved the gun but wanted a thumb safety on it, so when asked, Browning sat down for a couple minutes and thought about it.  His response was along the lines of, “We can add it, but it will only be useable with the hammer back.” and that’s why there’s an extra safety on the 1911.

Colt M1911 A1 Concealability

Concealability
The M1911A1 is a large gun measuring 8.5 inches long and 5.5 inches tall, so this gun would be difficult to conceal without the proper holster and clothing.  However, concealing this historically significant firearm would be wholly unamerican.
