BSA Welrod Features

The BSA Welrod is a bolt-action integrally-suppressed pistol developed by the British Inter-Services Research Bureau (later Station IX) for covert, commando and resistance forces during WWII.  The Welrod’s sound suppression comes from a ported barrel and rubber discs or “wipes” that trap the expanding gas inside two large expansion chambers.

BSA Welrod Capacity

The Welrod was made in 2 models, one chambered in .32ACP offering a single-stack 8 round magazine and the other chambered in 9x19mm that offered a magazine capacity of 6 rounds.  This gun can be fed from the magazine or breech-loaded.  The magazine doubles as a grip in the case of the Welrod in order to save material.

The Welrod was designed with stealth in mind.  The two variations of this gun weighed 2.2 and 3.3 pounds depending on the model, and both were designed to be used from very close range.  The bolt-action design required users to get as close as 10 yards from their target before engaging to ensure a hit as follow-up shots were not an effective option.

BSA Welrod Mobility

Mobility

BSA Welrod Ergonomics

Ergonomics
The Welrod is notably front-heavy as with any other suppressed pistol, and the handling is incredibly awkward.  The magazine release is located under the grip safety along the back of the gun, and the bolt is cycled by rotating the bolt handle on the back of the gun, pulling it back, pushing forward and rotating back to its locked position.  The grip is molded into a shell that wraps around the magazine offering a very grippy yet uncomfortable hold.

BSA Welrod Fit & Finish

The Welrod was made out of cheap components in order to ease production as well as make it user-serviceable.  The rubber wipes used in the sound suppression system start as chunks of rubber that get shot-through until they stop working.  In such an event, the user can easily swap the wipes out for new ones to retain the best sound suppression that is often described as “Hollywood-quiet”.

BSA Welrod Concealability

Concealability
The Welrod was nicknamed the “bicycle pump” due to the look of its design focusing on clandestine activity.  This weapon was often concealed under a jacket by many of its users, however its real concealability is in its sound suppression and its lack of identifying markings.  These guns weren’t even serialized in an effort to prevent blame falling to its manufacturer as they were dropped to resistance fighters.
