See DealThe Browning M1919 was designed by John Moses Browning during World War I as an air-cooled replacement for his water-cooled M1917. This design was so successful in trials and field testing that the design ended up being re-worked and adopted into many different roles allowing it to be mounted on Jeeps, trucks, boats and helicopters. While the original chambering was in .30-06, its long service life and impressive performance led it to be adopted by other countries which allowed it to be

Browning M1919 Capacity
The M1919 was originally chambered in .30-06 and fed from woven cloth ammo belts that fed from steel ammo cans. After some time, stamped steel disintegrating belts would replace the cloth option due to the increase in reliability. Some versions of the 1919 are still in use today and are mounted in helicopters for the door gunners to use, though these are chambered in 7.62NATO and feed with the use of M13 links.
Browning M1919 Feature
The M1919 is a fully-automatic, belt-fed machine gun that operates on a short-recoil action and fires from a closed bolt. It has a 24 inch air-cooled barrel surrounded by a heat shield that is paired with flip-up iron sights that include a range-adjustable rear sight on all of the variants from the A1 to the A6 The base 1919 was mounted inside of tanks and had no sights.. The front of the receiver includes the male end of the tripod connection hardware allowing the entire setup to be carried by multiple people.
Browning M1919 Ergonomics
The ground-based M1919 models and the vehicle-mounted versions are built with pistol grips at the back of the receiver while aircraft-mounted versions are equipped with a 2-handed spade grip and butterfly trigger. The charging handle is located on the right side of the receiver and, fun fact, troops were taught to pull the charging handle with an underhanded grip to prevent dislocating their thumb in the event of a “cook off” where the barrel gets so hot that it sets off the round.
Browning M1919 Mobility
The standard M1919A1 had an unloaded weight of 31 pounds and measured approximately 38 inches long. Add the 14 pound tripod and multiple boxes of ammo and you see clearly why this gun was fielded with a 2-man machine gun crew. The most mobile production version was the M1919A4 which added a stock and bipod to allow the user to fire the gun from the shoulder.
Browning M1919 Fit-N-Finish
The M1919 is made almost entirely out of steel and all of its components are parkerized. The receiver is made from two thick plates that are riveted onto the different components to provide an incredibly sturdy frame. The models still in use by door gunners in helicopters have been rearsenaled with a black nitride finish to improve their resistance to damage from weather and wear.
