Ballistic Stats
The AKS-74U, referred to by many as the "Krinkov", is a compact variant of the AK74. Its design began in the mid 1970's and was adopted in 1979 where it was issued to Russian paratroopers, Spetsnaz (special forces), artillery crews, pilots and vehicle crews. It is currently still in service with Russian police units. Parts kits are available, yet rare, for those who want to build their own Krinkov, but keep in mind it requires NFA registration due to the short barrel

Aks-74U Capacity
The Krinkov is chambered in 5.45x39mm (7N6) and feeds from double-stack, double-feed detachable box magazines. These are the same magazines used in standard AK74 rifles. The magazines exhibit a less extreme curve than the 7.62 magazines and are made from Bakelite instead of stamped steel. The colors of these magazines can range from orange to brown to nearly-black to “plum” colored.
Aks-74U Feature
The AKS-74U is a compact version of the AK74 and shares parts interchangeability with the majority of its components. It is built with a stamped, triangular folding stock (S) and differs from its full-length older brother with its hinged dust cover that has a square-notch rear sight and its shortened 7.9” barrel (U). On the muzzle sits a “booster” that captures gas to improve cycling due to the short dwell time from the short barrel.
Aks-74U Ergonomics
The Krinkov has identical controls to the AK74 and utilizes a stamped folding stock that offers a much better cheek weld than the underfolding stock. The handguard has also been shortened to help reduce the gun’s overall length. The Krinkov retains the standard pistol grip from the AK74 and, aside from the hinge on the dust cover, disassembles the same way as the full-size rifle.
Aks-74U Mobility
The Krink has an unloaded weight of 5.5 pounds and measures 19.3 inches long when the stock is folded and 28.7 inches with the stock extended. The low weight allows the users to easily carry the rifle for extended periods. Its folded length allows for easy storage as well as maneuvering in and out of vehicles, and its extended length improves its use in close-quarter environments.
Aks-74U Fit-N-Finish
The Krinkov is built on a stamped receiver with a forged barrel trunion. Just like every other AK, many of the moving parts have wide tolerances. This made the manufacture of AK pattern firearms much more speedy, and it also has been attributed to the AK’s reliability. The Krinkov is currently used by Russian police agencies and has been since the early 1980’s due to most Russian military troops not liking the short design.
