AK47 Features

The AK47 is a select-fire rifle capable of firing in semi- and full-automatic fire and operates on a long-stroke gas piston and 2-lug rotating bolt action.  These rifles were designed to use a lot of stamped steel components in order to offer a heavy volume of fire in a cost-effective package.  These rifles are built with a 16.25 inch barrel and are very easy to maintain.

AK47 Capacity

The AK47 is chambered in 7.62x39mm and feeds most commonly from 30-round detachable box magazines that have an incredibly recognizable curve.  Though its standard magazine capacity is 30 rounds, smaller 10 and 20 round magazines and larger 45 round magazines can be found, as well as 60 and 75 round drum magazines.

The AK47 measures 35 inches long and has an unloaded weight of 7.7 pounds making it shorter and lighter than the SKS which it replaced as the standard infantry rifle for Soviet forces.  The AK47 falls short in handling against the American M4 rifle due to its heavier weight and recoil as well as its more primitive control layout.

AK47 Ergonomics

Ergonomics
The original AK47 was designed with wood furniture including its stock that drops rather far, leaving the user’s shoulder under the receiver.  The magazine release is located behind the magazine, and the safety lever and reciprocating charging handle are located along the right side of the gun.  There is no last-round bolt-hold-open device so the bolt needs to be cycled after inserting a new magazine.

AK47 Fit & Finish

The AK47 was originally made from a stamped receiver, however some receivers are milled due to the amount of time required to develop large-scale industrial stamping techniques.  Eventually the design was finalized and the AKM was adopted with a stamped receiver and put into full production.  AK47 rifles can be found today in pristine conditions or covered in rust with worn out barrels, though most of them will still cycle with a little bit of oil.
