Now, to be sure, the actual Red Army hasn’t existed in name since 1946, and the Soviet Army itself was dissolved in 1991. But don’t sweat it – Red Army Standard is just a brand name, so this 7.62x54r ammo hasn’t been sitting in storage since the Truman administration. It’s new production!
This is the classic example of Russia putting as much cost-saving steel into a cartridge as they can. The 148 grain FMJ bullet has a bimetal jacket, which is mainly strengthened by steel and accordingly 100 percent magnetic. The case is also made of solid steel, so you’ll have about as much luck reloading it as you would a banana peel. The case is coated in polymer which facilitates smoother feeding and can even help prevent the formation of corrosion.
Speaking of corrosion, these new rounds’ Berdan primers won’t deposit caustic salts that could cause your Mosin-Nagant to rust. Steel cased ammo always fires a little dirtier, but that’s just the price you pay for saving money!
Please note that this is not 7.62x39 or 7.62x51 ammunition.
