The brainchild of Don Allen, all the Dakota cartridges are based off the .404 Jeffery except for the .450 Dakota, which is base off the .416 Rigby. The powerful .416 Dakota is well suited for big game and is the second largest in the Dakota series. Allen opted not to use a belted case in his design as it is easier to control the headspace.
An interesting observation about the Dakota designs, is the should length decreases, and the shoulder angle increases, as the calibers goes up, which provides for maximum case volume. The .416 Dakota is capable of propelling a .416†dia. 400 grain bullet at 2,450 fps. with 5,330 ft. lbs. of energy at the muzzle.
